Today we’re visiting David in Beavercreek, Ohio, where hedges do much more than define the edges of garden beds. Over the past decade, David and his family have used them to shape pathways, create garden rooms, and bring structure to the property. Here’s what David has to say:
This has been a 10-year project, evolving into a mostly finished garden. Inspired by English manicured hedges, we have created a unique and special garden for the family to enjoy.
Clipped boxwoods (Buxus cvs., Zones 5–9) line the long pathway leading from the side entrance to the front courtyard.
Eight garden areas incorporate more than 1,000 boxwoods to create this intricate knot garden.
Boxwoods of various sizes are clipped into rounded, cloudlike forms, while a row of trimmed ‘Fastigiata’ European hornbeams (Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’, Zones 4–8) defines the perimeter.
Purple European beech (Fagus sylvatica, Zones 4–7) was purchased by the linear foot to create an instant hedge.
Hidden pathways guide visitors into other gardens throughout the property.
Additional hedges screen the house from the pool house and pool.
