Here at Garden Photo of the Day, when we’re talking about gardens we’re usually talking about plants. Plant combinations, closeups, or sweeping views of expansive beds or border—the majority of submissions focus on the plant life that make our outdoor spaces special. However, there is so much more that goes into a garden. Garden art brings personality to a space, paths allow us to move through the garden with ease, and seating areas allow us to enjoy and share our special spaces with others. One gardener who knows the importance of creating cozy garden spaces is Pamela Pearce in Eugene, Oregon (@thewalledgarden786). Pamela first shared her garden with us back in 2017 (A Space Within a Space), and today she is back she an update on the mini garden sanctuaries that invite and delight.
My garden on a typical sized urban lot located in Eugene, Oregon (Zone 8b). Although the he garden is relatively small, I have divided the space into distinct areas or “garden rooms” a concept made famous by the late British garden designer John Brookes. As a garden designer, I always stress that a garden has many functions but foremost is that it must have areas to be in the garden, a table to eat with family and friends or a small hideaway with one or two chairs. Here are some photos a places to be in my garden.
As soon as you enter Pamela’s back patio you are transported to a lush garden oasis. Greenery is tucked away and hanging from every possible surface and a few different seating options give you plenty of spots to settle depending on your mood.
Along with the cozy couch and arm chairs, a more formal outdoor dining table is the perfect setting for summer dinner parties or breakfast on a crisp, cool morning. Again, a vibrant wall of lush foliage surrounds the seating area and provides a stunning backdrop as well as a sense of privacy.
Here’s another one of Pamela’s gorgeous garden rooms, this one a little more tucked away and secluded. On a hot summer day this shady corner must be the perfect hideaway.
Even when the weather starts to turn, Pamela’s garden is a sublime setting for activities. This winter she invited friends over for a wreath making party and the surrounding landscape offered plenty of inspiration.
Lastly, one of the many garden paths that lead you from one garden room to the next. It is incredible the amount of depth and dimension Pamela has been able to achieve in a garden with limited space.
