Office supplies may be the answer to the ever-tricky question of how to train your vines
I wish I could claim this idea for easy, reusable plant ties as mine, but I first heard about it from a clematis grower and I haven’t looked back since. The Smart & Cool Reusable Silicone Magnetic Cable Ties are meant for cord organization, but they work great for training vines. A bit of stretch means they can secure the stems without damage, and they work on a variety of trellis sizes with just one or two wraps. They are faster to use than twine, less bulky than padded twist ties, and more durable than clips. Best of all, these cable ties last for years. While a dark green color would probably be optimal, the black ones blend in as foliage grows. A multi-colored pack is also available.

If hefty hoses are wearing you down, choose one that’s lightweight but heavy-duty
After a shoulder injury made heavy garden hoses difficult for me to manage, I discovered a lightweight black hose that completely changed my routine. At 5∕ 8-inch wide and 100 feet long, the Rapid Flo Compact Garden Hose from Teknor is surprisingly durable, doesn’t kink easily, and holds up beautifully under full sun exposure, making it perfect for everyday garden tasks in the heat of California summers. It’s so light, tough, and low-maintenance that it’s easily become my new favorite, replacing all of my existing hoses. After four years of consistent use, none of the new additions have shown any signs of wear and tear.

Deliver your next mulch haul intact with a two-wheel wheelbarrow
Gardeners have strong feelings about wheel- barrows, and rightly so; few pieces of equipment get as tough a workout in the garden. And nothing is more frustrating than accidentally dumping an overflowing wheelbarrow on its side halfway to the compost pile. After one too many such incidents, I switched from a one-wheel wheelbarrow to a double-wheel model and have never regretted it. As a chronic overfiller, my goal is to make as few trips as I possibly can. The stability of my True Temper 8-cubic-foot Poly Wheelbarrow means I can fill up a large-capacity tub completely, without fear of dropping anything along the way. You do sacrifice some maneuverability with two wheels, and it’s difficult to navigate between plants in a crowded bed, but the added stability and capacity is a worthwhile trade-off in my book.

Make quick work of transplanting with a well-crafted spade
I generally favor multipurpose tools, so if a specialty tool is going to win my heart, it has to be good enough for the extra trip to the shed to fetch it. In other words, the bar is high, and one of the few tools to surpass it is the Sneeboer Transplanting Spade with Steps. This narrow V-shaped spade makes quick work of slicing through the toughest root balls with a decisive foot stomp, allowing even mature ornamental grasses to be divided. It’s extremely sharp—and that’s coming from a person who loves to keep a sharp spade. The satisfying sound of steel slicing through roots can’t be beat. This tool has outperformed any other I have used for transplanting.

Think outside the (ice) box when it comes to moving soil
Frustrated with soil scoops that only held one cup at a time, I knew there had to be a more efficient way to transfer potting mix into planters or to fill seed trays. I found it with an almost comically sized restaurant ice scoop. With an 85-ounce capacity, my Winco Aluminum Utility Scoop allows me to move large amounts of soil quickly without making a mess. The scoop shape makes carefully backfilling around plants or pouring to fill tray cells a cinch. When a refresh is necessary, it’s handy for removing old soil from large containers. This tool is also useful for soil amendments, such as worm castings or biochar, when a rough measurement is needed.

Use a sturdy broom that can handle heavy debris to make garden cleanup quick and easy
I recently discovered The Original Garden Broom, made from strong coconut-tree fibers, and it has quickly become my go-to for outdoor cleaning. Its stiff bristles effortlessly sweep up leaves, gravel, and every- thing in between—whether it be on a patio, a lawn, or a more uneven surface. Unlike my old plastic outdoor brush, which bent out of shape and struggled with pebbles or damp leaves, this broom holds firm and gets the job done without a problem. As a bonus, it’s sustainably made. I love that it’s both functional and environmentally friendly. After using it for a year, it’s still in good condition.

Your drip-irrigation routine will flow more smoothly with this cut/punch tool
Over the years, I’ve cycled through several drip-irrigation hole punches: handheld press types, pin-style versions, and others that demanded far too much effort to use and got jammed after a single season. None of those lasted long in my toolbox. They often blistered my thumb, bent, or broke. That changed with the thoughtfully designed Drip Irrigation Cut/Punch Tool from Raindrip. It features a U-shaped pipe holder and a thumb-activated press. The punch grips the tubing securely, allowing precise, clean holes exactly where needed, which is especially useful when working with existing pipes in the garden. There’s no slippage and no strain. It’s ergonomic, efficient, and remarkably durable. After countless installations, this gadget remains the longest-standing tool in my irrigation kit—and the only one I genuinely enjoy using. It’s been a simple upgrade with lasting impact.
