Nancy’s Hidden Garden Treasures, Part 1

Hi GPODers!

We are obviously champions plants here at Garden Photo of the Day. From fascinating flowers and alluring annuals to prized houseplants, impressive edibles, and the statuesque trees and shrubs that dominate our landscapes. However, there are so many other elements that go into an exciting garden design—paths, patios, and other hardscaping features, furniture, lighting, and, of course, art. While our plant picks say a lot about our personality and style preferences, the purely ornamental additions to a space are often what set it a part from any other. Garden designer Nancy Mellen in Hingham, Massachusetts has shared her artful plant designs many times over the years (Previous submissions include: Spring and Summer 2024 in Nancy’s Massachusetts Garden, Fall Highlights from a New England Garden, Blooming Through the Winter, The Beauty of Old Roses, and more), and she has also taken us along to some of the incredible gardens she has visited around the globe (Hidden Gardens of Beacon Hill, Jardin du Luxembourg in August, and Morikami Japanese Garden). Today’s submission looks very different, as she turns her focus from her outstanding plants to the hidden treasures that are sprinkled throughout.

From past gardens you’ve shared with us I especially enjoy the hidden treasures, such as pots, statues, sculptures, etc. that people place in their gardens. Therefore, I decided to share some of my hidden treasures and a few that aren’t hidden.
