Today’s photos come from Christy who is sharing a really special program she put together along with her best friend Shelley in their hometown of El Dorado Hills, CA. Christy writes:
What started as an overgrown patch of weeds has blossomed into one of the most unique school garden programs in the region. Five years ago, I and my best friend Shelley rolled up our sleeves to revive a neglected school garden. Today, that space has transformed into a thriving outdoor classroom where hundreds of students learn more than how to grow vegetables. We also aim to teach them about sustainability, nutrition, environmental stewardship, and the joy of connecting with nature.

Inspired by Alice Waters and the Edible Schoolyard movement, our vision has always gone beyond planting tomatoes. Our goal is to help children understand where food comes from, why eating locally and seasonally matters, and how caring for the earth begins with small everyday actions. Our garden now features an orchard with 17 fruit trees, a greenhouse where students start seeds, vegetable gardens, composting and vermicomposting systems, pollinator habitats, and vibrant cutting flower gardens.
Every lesson is hands-on, allowing students to experience science, nutrition, and environmental education in a living classroom. More than 400 students visit the garden each month, learning everything from soil health and composting to integrated pest management and harvesting fresh produce. The lessons encourage curiosity, teamwork, and confidence while giving children an appreciation for the food they eat.

Through our social media platforms,@betweentwoshrubs on Instagram, we have inspired hundreds of thousands of viewers to plant gardens of their own. Their local garden tours across the greater Sacramento area have received more than 300,000 views on YouTube, encouraging homeowners to beautify their neighborhoods and reconnect with nature.

Now we’re taking that same passion even further. This September, we’re bringing a Farm-to-Fork celebration to the community, highlighting local growers, fresh food, and the importance of supporting regional agriculture. Our hope is to create an event that celebrates the people and partnerships that make local food systems thrive while inspiring the next generation to appreciate where their food comes from. Beyond just growing plants, we want this garden to help grow healthier kids, stronger communities, and a lifelong love of learning—one seed at a time.
Thanks for sharing Christy! We wish you the best on your celebration this September!
